2 Corinthians 6 · Grade 5

The Acceptable Time

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul appeals to the Corinthians as a fellow worker with God not to receive His grace in vain. Quoting Isaiah 49:8, he applies the prophet's day of favor to the present. Now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation. The Good News calls for a response today.

Paul then commends his ministry, not by letters or status, but by endurance. He lists afflictions, hardships, labors, sleepless nights, and hunger. Alongside these he lists the qualities produced by the Spirit: purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, sincere love, the word of truth, and the power of God. A string of paradoxes follows. Treated as deceivers yet true, unknown yet well known, sorrowful yet always rejoicing, poor yet making many rich, having nothing yet possessing everything.

Paul's heart is wide open to the Corinthians, and he asks them, as his children, to widen their hearts in return. He then calls them not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, using the image of two mismatched animals under one yoke. Righteousness and lawlessness, light and darkness, Christ and Belial have no partnership. The church is the temple of the living God. Weaving together words from the Old Testament, Paul shows that God will dwell among His people, receive them, and be a Father to them.
