A Letter on the Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul said the church was like a letter. It was not written with ink. God's Spirit wrote it on their hearts.

Long ago, God gave Moses His law on stone. Moses' face shined. He put a cloth over his face.

Paul said that when people turn to Jesus, the cloth is taken away. They can see God's glory. God's Spirit makes them more like Jesus.

Memory Verse

“But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.”

Unveiled Faces

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul did not need a letter to prove he was a true apostle. The believers in Corinth were his letter. They were written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God on their hearts.

When God gave the law to Moses on stone tablets, Moses' face shined with God's glory. He covered his face with a veil, and the glory faded. Paul said the new way of the Spirit has even greater glory.

Paul said, But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Paul said that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. God's people are being changed to be more like Jesus.

Written by the Spirit

Name Date

Read and Think

Some teachers came to Corinth with letters of recommendation. Paul says he needs none. The Corinthian believers are his letter, known and read by everyone. They are written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on human hearts.

Paul compares two covenants. The old covenant came with glory. When Moses brought the law, his face shone so brightly that the people could not look at him, and he wore a veil while the glory faded. If that covenant came with glory, the new covenant of the Spirit has even more glory, because it brings righteousness and it lasts.

Paul says that a veil still covers the hearts of many who read the law without Christ. But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit is, there is liberty. Believers look at the Lord's glory and are being changed into His image from glory to glory.

2 Corinthians 3 · Grade 5

The Ministry of the Spirit

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul's opponents carried letters of recommendation. Paul replies that the Corinthian church itself is his letter, written on hearts and read by all. The image recalls the prophets' promise that God would one day write His law on hearts and replace hearts of stone with hearts of flesh. Paul's sufficiency comes not from himself but from God, who made him a minister of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit.

He then contrasts the two covenants with care. The old covenant, engraved on stone, came with such glory that Israel could not gaze at Moses' face. Yet that glory was fading, and the covenant brought condemnation because it exposed sin without giving power to obey. The ministry of the Spirit brings righteousness and life, and its glory is permanent and surpassing.

Paul reads Exodus 34 typologically. Moses veiled his face so Israel would not see the fading glory. A similar veil lies over hearts when the old covenant is read apart from Christ. Only in Christ is it removed. Whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. All believers, with unveiled faces, behold the Lord's glory as in a mirror and are transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.
