Live in Peace

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul told the Corinthians he was coming for a third visit. He reminded them that Jesus was weak on the cross, but He lives by the power of God.

Paul asked them to look at their own hearts. Were they living by faith? Did they know Jesus was with them? Paul prayed that they would do what is right.

Paul wrote, Finally, brothers, rejoice! Be perfected. Be comforted. Be of the same mind. Live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. He ended with a blessing of grace, love, and fellowship.

Examine Yourselves

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul is coming to Corinth a third time. Following the Law, every matter will be settled by two or three witnesses. Some wanted proof that Christ was speaking through Paul. Paul reminds them that Christ was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by God's power. In the same way, Paul is weak in Christ, but will live with Him by God's power.

Paul turns the question around. Instead of testing Paul, they should examine themselves to see whether they are in the faith. Do they not realize that Jesus Christ is in them? Paul prays that they will do no wrong. He wants them to do what is right, even if he seems to have failed. He rejoices when he is weak and they are strong, and he prays for their restoration.

Paul writes these things while away so that when he comes he will not have to be harsh. The Lord gave him authority to build up, not to tear down. He closes with a call to rejoice, aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree, and live in peace. He sends greetings and ends with a blessing that names the Lord Jesus Christ, God, and the Holy Spirit.

The Trinitarian Blessing

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul announces his third visit and cites Deuteronomy 19:15, that every charge must be established by two or three witnesses. He warns that he will not spare those who continue in sin. The Corinthians demanded proof that Christ speaks through Paul. Paul answers with the pattern of the cross. Christ was crucified in weakness but lives by the power of God, and Paul shares both Christ's weakness and His resurrection power in dealing with them.

Paul reverses their demand for proof. They should examine and test themselves to see whether they are in the faith, recognizing that Jesus Christ is in them, unless they fail the test. Paul is confident they will see that he has not failed. His real prayer, however, is not for his own vindication but for their good. He wants them to do what is right even if he appears weak. He rejoices when he is weak and they are strong, and he prays for their restoration, or completeness.

Paul explains that he writes severely while absent so that he need not use severity in person, since the Lord's authority is for building up. His final words gather the themes of the letter into five commands: rejoice, aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, and live in peace. The promise follows that the God of love and peace will be with them. The letter ends with one of the clearest Trinitarian blessings in the New Testament: the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.

Show What You Know

  1. What Old Testament passage does Paul cite about witnesses?

  2. What pattern does Paul use to answer the demand for proof?

  3. What is Paul's real prayer?

  4. What makes the closing blessing Trinitarian?
