Boasting in Weakness

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul loved the Corinthians very much. He wanted them to stay true to Jesus. Some teachers came and taught a different Jesus. Paul said they were false teachers.

Paul taught the Corinthians for free. Then he told about his hard times. He worked hard. He was in danger in cities, in the wild, and at sea. He was often hungry, thirsty, and cold. He also worried about all the churches every day.

Paul did not brag about being strong. He wrote, If I must boast, I will boast of the things that concern my weakness. Once, he escaped from the city of Damascus in a basket let down from a window in the wall.

A Fool's Boast

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul asks the Corinthians to put up with a little foolishness. He feels a godly jealousy for them because he wants them to belong to Christ alone. He fears that, just as the serpent tricked Eve, they might be led away from sincere devotion to Christ. Some teachers were preaching a different Jesus, and the Corinthians were putting up with it.

Paul had preached to them free of charge, accepting support from other churches so he would not be a burden. He calls his rivals false apostles who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ. This is no surprise, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

Paul then boasts, but in an upside-down way. He lists hard work, prisons, danger on rivers, from robbers, in cities, in the wilderness, and at sea. He was often without sleep, hungry, thirsty, and cold. Beyond all this, he carried daily concern for all the churches. If he must boast, he will boast about his weakness. His final example is humbling. In Damascus, he escaped by being lowered in a basket through a window in the wall.

Boasting of Weakness

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul reluctantly enters the game of boasting his opponents were playing. Like a father who has promised his daughter in marriage, he wants to present the church as a pure bride to Christ. His fear is that, as the serpent deceived Eve, their minds will be corrupted from simple, pure devotion to Christ. These intruders preach another Jesus, a different spirit, and a different gospel, and the Corinthians tolerate it.

Paul had preached to them free of charge, and he insists he will keep doing so (11:7-12). He names them false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light, so it is no surprise that his servants appear as servants of righteousness.

Speaking as a fool, Paul matches their credentials: Hebrew, Israelite, descendant of Abraham. Then he turns boasting on its head. As a servant of Christ, he lists far greater labors, prisons, and harsh treatment. He faced shipwrecks and dangers from rivers, robbers, and false brothers. He knew toil, lack of sleep, hunger, thirst, and cold. Each day he felt concern for all the churches. If he must boast, he will boast of his weakness. His final example is humbling: he was let down in a basket through a window by the wall of Damascus (11:33).
