No God Like You

Name Date

Read the Story

Solomon turned and blessed all the people of Israel. He said Yahweh had kept his promise to David. David wanted to build the house, but God said his son would build it.

Solomon knelt on a bronze platform before all the people and spread out his hands toward heaven. He said there is no God like Yahweh in heaven or on earth. God keeps covenant and loving kindness.

Solomon asked God to hear when people pray toward this place. When they sin and turn back, hear from heaven and forgive. He asked God to hear strangers who came to pray, so all people might know His name.

Memory Verse

“Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Yes, hear from your dwelling place, even from heaven; and when you hear, forgive.”

Hear from Heaven and Forgive

Name Date

Read and Think

Solomon blessed the assembly and praised Yahweh, who spoke with his mouth to David and fulfilled it with his hand. God had chosen Jerusalem for his name and David to rule his people. Now the promised son had built the house.

Then Solomon knelt on a bronze platform and spread his hands toward heaven. He confessed that there is no God like Yahweh, who keeps covenant and loving kindness. But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Heaven cannot contain him, much less this house.

Solomon asked God to keep his eyes open toward the house day and night. When people sin, when trouble comes, or when they repent in a far land, may God hear from heaven and forgive. Even foreigners who come for his great name should be heard.

  2. What city did God choose for his name?

  3. What did Solomon do with his hands as he prayed?

A Prayer for Every Need

Name Date

Read and Think

Solomon's dedication prayer is one of the longest prayers in Scripture. He began with praise: God keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who walk before him with all their heart. God had kept every word he spoke to David, and Solomon asked him to keep the rest of his promise.

Solomon admitted that heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain God. Yet he asked God to have regard to the prayers made toward this house. Then he named situations: when someone wrongs a neighbor, when Israel is defeated, when there is no rain, when sickness comes, and when the people are carried away captive.

In each case the request is the same: hear from heaven, forgive, and act. Solomon included the foreigner, so that all the peoples of the earth might know God's name. He ended by asking God to arise into his resting place and to remember his loving kindness to David. In the New Testament, Jesus calls God's house a house of prayer for all the nations (Mark 11:17).

  2. What did Solomon admit about heaven?

  3. Name one situation Solomon prayed about.
