A Prayer for Every Need

Name Date

Read and Think

Solomon's dedication prayer is one of the longest prayers in Scripture. He began with praise: God keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who walk before him with all their heart. God had kept every word he spoke to David, and Solomon asked him to keep the rest of his promise.

Solomon admitted that heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain God. Yet he asked God to have regard to the prayers made toward this house. Then he named situations: when someone wrongs a neighbor, when Israel is defeated, when there is no rain, when sickness comes, and when the people are carried away captive.

In each case the request is the same: hear from heaven, forgive, and act. Solomon included the foreigner, so that all the peoples of the earth might know God's name. He ended by asking God to arise into his resting place and to remember his loving kindness to David. In the New Testament, Jesus calls God's house a house of prayer for all the nations (Mark 11:17).
