2 Chronicles 4 · Grade 5

Light, Bread, and Cleansing

Name Date

Read and Think

The temple's furnishings each pointed to how people came near to God. The great bronze altar stood for sacrifice. The sea and the ten basins stood for washing, since the priests had to be clean to serve. The work was done by Huram-abi, the craftsman from Tyre.

Inside were ten golden lampstands and ten tables for the show bread, ten times the single lampstand and table of the tabernacle. Light and bread were always before Yahweh. The courts and doors marked out where priests and people could stand.

The Chronicler stresses abundance: the bronze could not be weighed, and the gold was pure. In the New Testament, Jesus says, I am the light of the world (John 8:12), and, I am the bread of life (John 6:35). The lampstands and tables point forward to him.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the bronze altar stand for?

  2. Why did the priests need the basins?

  3. How did the temple compare to the tabernacle's lampstand and table?

  4. What does the Chronicler stress?

  5. What does Jesus say in John 8:12?
