God Brings Them Home

Read the Story

The last kings of Judah did not obey God. God sent helpers to warn them again and again. God loved His people. But they did not listen.

So the people had to leave their home. They went far away to Babylon. They stayed there for seventy years.

Then God moved the heart of a new king named Cyrus. Cyrus said God told him to build His house. Go home! God's people could go back.

Because He Had Compassion

Name Date

Read the Story

The last kings of Judah did evil in Yahweh's sight. The king of Babylon carried some of the vessels of Yahweh's house to Babylon. Zedekiah did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet.

Yahweh sent his messengers again and again. He had compassion on his people and his house. But they mocked them and despised his words. So Babylon came. The people were carried away.

The land rested seventy years, as Jeremiah had said. Then Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia. Cyrus wrote that Yahweh told him to build a house in Jerusalem. Whoever is among his people, let him go up.

Memory Verse

“Cyrus king of Persia says, ‘Yahweh, the God of heaven, has given all the kingdoms of the earth to me; and he has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all his people, Yahweh his God be with him, and let him go up.’”

No Remedy, Then Return

Name Date

Read and Think

After Josiah, four kings reigned quickly. Jehoahaz was removed by Egypt. Jehoiakim and Jehoiachin did evil and were taken to Babylon. Zedekiah reigned eleven years and did evil. He did not humble himself before Jeremiah. He stiffened his neck and would not turn to Yahweh.

The leaders and priests sinned greatly and made Yahweh's house unclean. Yahweh sent his messengers, rising up early and sending. He had compassion on his people. But they mocked the messengers, despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until there was no remedy. Babylon came, the temple was burned, and the survivors went into exile.

The land enjoyed its Sabbaths for seventy years, as Jeremiah had spoken. Then in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, Yahweh stirred up his spirit. Cyrus said Yahweh, the God of heaven, had given him all the kingdoms of the earth. He said God had commanded him to build God a house in Jerusalem. Whoever is among his people, Yahweh his God be with him, and let him go up.

The Last Word Is Hope

Name Date

Read and Think

Chronicles closes the story of Judah's kings quickly. Four kings in about twenty-two years were removed by Egypt or Babylon. Zedekiah, the last, refused to humble himself before Jeremiah and hardened his heart. The priests and people polluted the house that God had made holy.

Verse 15 shows God's heart even in judgment. Yahweh sent his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place. Their response was mockery, until there was no remedy. Jerusalem fell, the temple burned, and the people went into exile. The land kept its Sabbaths for seventy years to fulfill Jeremiah's word.

Yet Chronicles does not end in ruin. Its final verses announce that Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, who commanded the building of God's house and invited God's people to go up. The book that began with Adam ends with a call home. In the New Testament, Peter writes that the Lord is patient, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).
