Encouraged to Serve

Name Date

Read the Story

Josiah kept a Passover to Yahweh in Jerusalem. He set the priests in their offices. He encouraged them in the service of Yahweh's house.

Josiah gave the people thirty thousand lambs and goats from his own flocks. His leaders gave freely too. The singers stood in their places as David had ordered. The gatekeepers did not need to leave their gates, for the Levites made ready for them.

No Passover like it had been kept since the days of Samuel the prophet. Later Neco king of Egypt came to fight. Neco said God had sent him, but Josiah would not listen. Josiah was wounded and died. All Judah and Jeremiah mourned for him.

A Passover Like No Other

Name Date

Read and Think

In the eighteenth year of his reign, Josiah kept a Passover to Yahweh in Jerusalem. He set the priests in their offices and encouraged them. He told the Levites to put the holy ark in Solomon's house, for they no longer had to carry it on their shoulders. Now serve Yahweh your God and his people Israel.

Josiah gave the people thirty thousand lambs and kids and three thousand cattle from his own possessions. His princes gave willingly to the people, priests, and Levites. The singers, the sons of Asaph, were in their place, and the gatekeepers stayed at every gate, because the Levites prepared for them.

No Passover like it had been kept in Israel since Samuel the prophet. Later Neco king of Egypt marched to Carchemish, and Josiah went out against him. Neco warned that God had commanded him and that Josiah should not oppose God. Josiah did not listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God. He was wounded and died, and Jeremiah lamented for him.

Worship in Order

Name Date

Read and Think

Josiah's Passover was the high point of his reign. He set the priests in their offices and encouraged them in the service of Yahweh's house. He reminded the Levites that their old task of carrying the ark had ended, and that now their calling was to serve Yahweh and his people. Leadership here meant both order and encouragement.

Generosity marked the feast. Josiah gave thirty thousand lambs and kids and three thousand cattle from his own possessions so that the people could eat. His officials followed with willing gifts. Everyone had a role, from singers to gatekeepers, and the Levites served the priests and themselves. No Passover like it had been kept since Samuel.

The chapter ends in sorrow. Josiah went out to fight Neco of Egypt. Neco warned him that God was with Egypt, but Josiah disguised himself and did not listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God. He was wounded and died. All Judah mourned, and Jeremiah lamented for him. In the New Testament, Paul writes, Christ our Passover has been sacrificed in our place (1 Corinthians 5:7).

  1. What did leadership mean here?

  2. Why did Josiah give so many animals?

  3. What did Josiah do before the battle?

  4. Whose words did Josiah not listen to?

  5. What does Paul write in 1 Corinthians 5:7?
