Huldah the prophetess said that because Josiah's heart was tender and he humbled himself, God had heard him. Josiah gathered the people and read them the book. He made a covenant to keep God's commands with all his heart. All his days the people served Yahweh.

A Tender Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Josiah began to reign at eight. He did right, walking in the ways of David, turning neither to the right nor the left. In his eighth year, while still young, he began to seek the God of David. In his twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places and idols, and he did the same in the north.

In his eighteenth year Josiah sent workers to repair Yahweh's house. As they brought out the money, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law given by Moses. Shaphan the scribe read it before the king. When Josiah heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes and sent men to ask Yahweh about the words.

Huldah the prophetess answered that judgment would come on the land, but because Josiah's heart was tender and he humbled himself, it would not come in his days. The king gathered the elders and all the people, great and small, and read the whole book to them. He stood in his place and made a covenant to walk after Yahweh with all his heart and soul. All his days the people did not turn from following Yahweh.

The Word Rediscovered

Name Date

Read and Think

Josiah's reign shows a young heart turning toward God before the Scriptures were even found. At sixteen he began to seek the God of David. At twenty he began a sweeping purge of idols, carrying it even into the ruined north. His faithfulness began with seeking, and it grew into action.

The great turning point came in his eighteenth year. During the temple repairs, Hilkiah found the book of the law given by Moses, long neglected. When Josiah heard it, he tore his clothes. He grasped that Judah had not kept the word of Yahweh and that great wrath stood against them.

Huldah confirmed that judgment would come, yet God honored Josiah's tender, humble heart. Josiah did not keep the word to himself. He read it to all the people and stood to make a covenant with all his heart and soul. His leadership turned the nation back for a generation. In the New Testament, Paul tells Timothy that from infancy he had known the holy Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:15).

  2. What happened during the temple repairs?

  3. What did Josiah grasp when he heard it?
