2 Chronicles 32 · Grade 5
A Greater One Is with Us
Read and Think
Chronicles opens this chapter with a striking phrase: after these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib invaded. Faithfulness did not prevent trouble. Hezekiah responded with both planning and faith. He stopped the springs, rebuilt the wall, and armed the people.
His speech is the heart of the chapter. There is a greater one with us than with him. An arm of flesh is with him, but Yahweh our God is with us to help us and to fight our battles. Assyria's power was only human. The people rested on these words. Sennacherib's servants then mocked Yahweh, treating him like the idols of the nations.
Hezekiah and Isaiah cried to heaven, and Yahweh sent an angel who cut off the Assyrian army. Yet Hezekiah later struggled with pride and had to humble himself. Chronicles notes that God left him to test him, to know all that was in his heart. In the New Testament, Paul writes, if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31).
