Heaps of Gifts

Name Date

Read the Story

After the feast, Israel went out and broke the idols in all the cities. Then Hezekiah set the priests and Levites in their groups. He gave from his own things for the offerings.

He told the people to give the portion for the priests and Levites. At once the people brought the firstfruits of grain, new wine, oil, and honey. They brought the tithe of all things in abundance. They laid them in heaps.

Hezekiah and the leaders saw the heaps. They blessed Yahweh and his people. The chief priest said that since the people began to bring gifts, the priests had eaten and had plenty left over. Hezekiah did what was good, right, and faithful. He did it with all his heart and prospered.

Read and Think

When the Passover ended, Israel went out. They broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah poles in Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh. Hezekiah set the priests and Levites in their groups. He gave from his own things for the burnt offerings, as the law said.

He told the people to give the portion of the priests and Levites. Then they could give themselves to the law of Yahweh. As soon as the word went out, Israel gave much. They brought the firstfruits of grain, new wine, oil, and honey. They laid the gifts in heaps from the third month to the seventh.

When Hezekiah saw the heaps, he blessed Yahweh. Azariah the chief priest said they had eaten and had plenty left, for Yahweh had blessed his people. Storerooms were prepared. Hezekiah did what was good, right, and faithful. He did every work with all his heart and prospered.

Whole-Hearted Service

Name Date

Read and Think

Revival in chapter 30 led to reform in chapter 31. The people themselves went out to destroy idols across the land, even in the north. Worship that had been restored now had to be sustained. Hezekiah organized the priests and Levites by divisions, as David had done, and led the giving by offering from his own possessions.

He asked the people to provide for the priests and Levites so they could devote themselves to God's law. The response was overwhelming. Firstfruits and tithes piled up for four months. The chief priest explained the surplus simply: Yahweh had blessed his people. Generosity and blessing went together.

The chapter ends with a summary of Hezekiah's heart. He did what was good, right, and faithful before Yahweh. In every work, in the service of God's house, in the law, and in the commandments, he sought his God with all his heart and prospered. In the New Testament, Paul writes, whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23).
