Return to Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

Hezekiah decided to keep the Passover. He sent letters to all Israel and Judah. The letters told the people to return to Yahweh, for He is gracious and merciful. God would not turn away His face from them if they returned to Him.

The messengers went from city to city. Many laughed and mocked them. But some men of Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled themselves and came. God gave Judah one heart to obey.

Many had not cleansed themselves. Hezekiah prayed for Yahweh to pardon all who set their hearts to seek God. Yahweh listened and healed the people. They kept the feast seven days, and then seven more. The priests blessed the people, and their prayer came up to heaven.

Memory Verse

“Then the Levitical priests arose and blessed the people. Their voice was heard, and their prayer came up to his holy habitation, even to heaven.”

Gracious and Merciful

Name Date

Read and Think

Hezekiah and his leaders decided to keep the Passover in the second month, since the priests were not ready in the first. Letters went out from Beersheba to Dan. Children of Israel, return to Yahweh. Do not be stiff-necked. Yahweh your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you if you return to him.

The runners passed from city to city through Ephraim and Manasseh, but people laughed them to scorn. Nevertheless some humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem. In Judah the hand of God gave them one heart. A great assembly gathered and removed the foreign altars.

Many from the north had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the Passover. Hezekiah prayed for them, and Yahweh listened to Hezekiah and healed the people. An Open Invitation

Name Date

Read and Think

Hezekiah's Passover reached beyond Judah. Though Israel's northern kingdom had fallen to Assyria, he sent letters to the remnant from Beersheba to Dan. The message was a call to repent rooted in God's character: Yahweh is gracious and merciful, and would not turn away His face from them if they returned to Him.

The response was mixed. Many laughed the runners to scorn, but some from Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled themselves and came. In Judah God gave them one heart. The people tore down altars to other gods, and the Passover was kept with great joy.

Many from the north ate without proper cleansing. Hezekiah did not turn them away. He prayed that the good Yahweh would pardon everyone who set his heart to seek God, even if not cleansed according to the sanctuary's rules. Yahweh heard and healed the people. In the New Testament, Jesus tells of a king who sent servants to invite people to a wedding feast, though many made light of it (Matthew 22:2-5).
