2 Chronicles 30 · Grade 5
An Open Invitation
Read and Think
Hezekiah's Passover reached beyond Judah. Though Israel's northern kingdom had fallen to Assyria, he sent letters to the remnant from Beersheba to Dan. The message was a call to repent rooted in God's character: Yahweh is gracious and merciful, and would not turn away His face from them if they returned to Him.
The response was mixed. Many laughed the runners to scorn, but some from Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled themselves and came. In Judah God gave them one heart. The people tore down altars to other gods, and the Passover was kept with great joy.
Many from the north ate without proper cleansing. Hezekiah did not turn them away. He prayed that the good Yahweh would pardon everyone who set his heart to seek God, even if not cleansed according to the sanctuary's rules. Yahweh heard and healed the people. In the New Testament, Jesus tells of a king who sent servants to invite people to a wedding feast, though many made light of it (Matthew 22:2-5).
