In the First Month

Name Date

Read the Story

Hezekiah was twenty-five when he began to reign. He did right in Yahweh's eyes, like David. In the first year, in the first month, he opened the doors of Yahweh's house and repaired them.

He gathered the priests and Levites. He told them to sanctify themselves and clean the house of Yahweh. He said their fathers shut the doors and stopped worship. He said it was in his heart to make a covenant with Yahweh. The Levites carried out all the filth. They finished in sixteen days.

Hezekiah went up to Yahweh's house early. Offerings were made. The Levites stood with David's instruments and the priests with trumpets. The song of Yahweh began. All the people bowed and worshiped. Hezekiah and the people rejoiced.

Read and Think

Hezekiah began to reign at twenty-five and did right in Yahweh's eyes, according to all that David had done. He did not wait. In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of Yahweh's house that Ahaz had shut, and he repaired them.

He gathered the priests and Levites. He told them to sanctify themselves and the house of Yahweh, and to carry the filthiness out. He said their fathers forsook Yahweh and shut the doors of the porch. He said it was in his heart to make a covenant with Yahweh. He told the Levites not to be negligent now, for Yahweh had chosen them to stand before Him.

The Levites cleansed the temple in sixteen days. Hezekiah rose early and brought sin offerings for all Israel. The Levites stood with David's instruments, and when the burnt offering began, the song of Yahweh began also with the trumpets. The whole assembly worshiped. Hezekiah and all the people rejoiced because God had prepared the people, for it was done suddenly.

The Doors Opened

Name Date

Read and Think

Hezekiah inherited a closed temple. His father Ahaz had shut its doors. Hezekiah acted immediately: in the first month of his first year he reopened and repaired them. In Chronicles he is compared to David more fully than any king since Solomon.

His speech to the Levites joins confession and hope. He said their fathers trespassed, shut the doors, put out the lamps, and stopped the offerings, so wrath came on Judah. Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with Yahweh. The Levites cleansed the house in sixteen days, carrying out the uncleanness to the brook Kidron.

Then worship returned in order. Sin offerings were made for all Israel. Singers and trumpets joined as the burnt offering began, and the whole assembly bowed. The people brought so many offerings that the priests needed the Levites' help. In the New Testament, the writer of Hebrews says believers may enter the holy place with boldness by the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:19).

Show What You Know

  1. Who had shut the temple doors?

  2. What did the fathers stop?

  3. Where did the Levites carry the uncleanness?

  4. Why did the priests need the Levites' help?
