Oded Speaks Up

Name Date

Read the Story

Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign. He did not do right in Yahweh's eyes. He made images for Baal and burned incense in the high places. So Yahweh let his enemies defeat him.

Israel carried away many people of Judah to Samaria. But Oded, a prophet of Yahweh, met the army. He said Yahweh was angry with Judah. He said Israel had sins of their own. He told them to send back the captives. Some leaders of Ephraim agreed.

The leaders took the captives. They clothed all who had no clothes. They gave them sandals, food, and drink. They carried the weak on donkeys and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees. But Ahaz still did not turn to God.

Memory Verse

“The men who have been mentioned by name rose up and took the captives, and with the plunder clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them, gave them sandals, gave them something to eat and to drink, anointed them, carried all the feeble of them on donkeys, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brothers. 2 Chronicles 28 · Grade 4

Mercy from an Unexpected Place

Name Date

Read and Think

Ahaz did not do right in Yahweh's eyes. He made molten images for the Baals and sacrificed in the high places and under every green tree. So Yahweh gave him into the hand of Syria and of Israel, and Judah suffered a great defeat.

Israel carried away many captives to Samaria. Oded, a prophet of Yahweh, went out to meet the army. He said Yahweh was angry with Judah, but Israel also had sins of their own against Yahweh their God. He told them to send back the captives, for Yahweh's fierce wrath was on them. Four leaders of Ephraim stood up and agreed.

So the armed men left the captives and the plunder. The leaders clothed the naked, gave them sandals, food, and drink, and anointed them. They carried the feeble on donkeys and brought them to Jericho, to their brothers. Meanwhile Ahaz sought help from Assyria, not from God. He shut the doors of Yahweh's house.

2 Chronicles 28 · Grade 5

Clothed, Fed, and Carried Home

Name Date

Read and Think

Ahaz was one of Judah's worst kings. He made images for the Baals and sacrificed on every high place. In distress he sought Assyria, not God, and grew even more unfaithful. He shut the doors of Yahweh's house and made altars in every corner of Jerusalem.

In the middle of this darkness comes a surprising scene. Israel had taken many captives from Judah. The prophet Oded told the army that God had used them to judge Judah, but they had sins of their own. Leaders of Ephraim listened. They refused to bring the captives in, fearing to add to Israel's guilt.

Verse 15 describes what they did: they clothed the naked, gave them sandals, food, and drink, anointed them, carried the feeble on donkeys, and brought them to Jericho. The northern kingdom, often unfaithful, showed mercy here. In the New Testament, Jesus tells of a Samaritan who bandaged a wounded man, set him on his own animal, and cared for him (Luke 10:33-34).

Show What You Know

  1. Whom did Ahaz seek in distress?

  2. What did Oded tell the army?

  3. Why did the leaders refuse to bring the captives in?

  4. Where were the captives brought?

  5. What parable does Luke 10:33-34 tell?

Think About It

  1. The leaders of Ephraim acted with mercy toward their enemies. Who is someone you could show unexpected kindness to?

  2. In the New Testament, the Samaritan cared for a wounded man much like these captives were cared for (Luke 10:33-34). How can you be a good neighbor this week?

Memory Verse

“The men who have been mentioned by name rose up and took the captives, and with the plunder clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them, gave them sandals, gave them something to eat and to drink, anointed them, carried all the feeble of them on donkeys, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brothers.
