He Ordered His Ways

Name Date

Read the Story

Jotham was twenty-five years old when he began to reign. He reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did right in Yahweh's eyes, like his father Uzziah. But he did not enter Yahweh's temple.

Jotham built the upper gate of Yahweh's house. He built much on the wall. He built cities in the hill country and forts and towers in the forests.

He fought the Ammonites and won. They gave him silver, wheat, and barley each year. So Jotham became mighty, because he ordered his ways before Yahweh his God.

Steady Faithfulness

Name Date

Read and Think

Jotham's chapter is short and quiet. He began to reign at twenty-five and ruled sixteen years. He did right in Yahweh's eyes, following the good example of his father Uzziah. He learned from his father's mistake and did not enter Yahweh's temple. Yet the people still did corruptly.

Jotham was a builder. He built the upper gate of Yahweh's house and strengthened the wall of Ophel. He built cities in the hill country of Judah, and fortresses and towers in the forests.

He fought the king of the Ammonites and won. For three years the Ammonites paid him silver, wheat, and barley. The reason for his strength is given clearly: Jotham became mighty, because he ordered his ways before Yahweh his God.

  2. What mistake did Jotham learn from?

  3. What did the people still do?

Ordered Ways

Name Date

Read and Think

After the dramatic fall of Uzziah, Jotham's reign is calm. Chronicles praises him without a single criticism. He did right like his father, but he did not repeat his father's pride. He did not enter the temple. Still, the people continued to do corruptly, a sign of trouble ahead.

His building work centered on God's house and the defense of the land. He built the upper gate of the temple, strengthened Ophel, and built cities, fortresses, and towers. God gave him victory over Ammon, and tribute came for three years.

Verse 6 is the summary: Jotham became mighty, because he ordered his ways before Yahweh his God. To order one's ways is to arrange life deliberately in God's presence. His strength was the fruit of steady faithfulness. In the New Testament, Paul urges believers to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called (Ephesians 4:1).

Show What You Know

  1. What did Jotham not repeat?

  2. What sign of trouble remained?

  3. What did his building work center on?

  4. What does it mean to order one's ways?

  5. What does Paul urge in Ephesians 4:1?
