2 Chronicles 27 · Grade 5

Ordered Ways

Name Date

Read and Think

After the dramatic fall of Uzziah, Jotham's reign is calm. Chronicles praises him without a single criticism. He did right like his father, but he did not repeat his father's pride. He did not enter the temple. Still, the people continued to do corruptly, a sign of trouble ahead.

His building work centered on God's house and the defense of the land. He built the upper gate of the temple, strengthened Ophel, and built cities, fortresses, and towers. God gave him victory over Ammon, and tribute came for three years.

Verse 6 is the summary: Jotham became mighty, because he ordered his ways before Yahweh his God. To order one's ways is to arrange life deliberately in God's presence. His strength was the fruit of steady faithfulness. In the New Testament, Paul urges believers to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called (Ephesians 4:1).
