As Long as He Sought Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

The people made Uzziah king when he was sixteen. He reigned fifty-two years. He did right in Yahweh's eyes. He sought God in the days of Zechariah. As long as he sought Yahweh, God made him prosper.

God helped him. He built towers in Jerusalem and in the wilderness. He dug many wells, for he had many cattle. He loved farming. He had a strong army, and his name spread far.

But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up. He went into the temple to burn incense. The priests told him this was not for him. Uzziah was angry. Then he became sick. He lived in a separate house.

His Heart Was Lifted Up

Name Date

Read and Think

Uzziah became king at sixteen and reigned fifty-two years. He did right in Yahweh's eyes and set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who understood the visions of God. As long as he sought Yahweh, God made him prosper.

God helped him against the Philistines and Arabians. He built towers, dug many wells, and had farmers and vinedressers, for he loved the soil. He equipped a large army and built machines for the walls. His name spread far, for he was marvelously helped until he was strong.

But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up, and he went into the temple to burn incense. Azariah and eighty brave priests stood against him. It isn’t for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to Yahweh, but for the priests. Uzziah grew angry, and leprosy broke out on his forehead before the altar. He lived in a separate house, and his son Jotham ruled for him.

Marvelously Helped

Name Date

Read and Think

Uzziah's long reign was one of Judah's most successful. Chronicles gives the key in verse 5: as long as he sought Yahweh, God made him prosper. His victories, building projects, wells, farms, and army were all gifts. He was marvelously helped.

Verse 15 adds a warning hidden in praise: he was helped until he was strong. Verse 16 completes the turn. When he was strong, his heart was lifted up. He entered the temple to burn incense, a task God gave only to Aaron's sons. Pride made him think the king could take the priest's place.

Azariah and eighty priests confronted him, and the king raged. In that moment leprosy broke out on his forehead, and he hurried out, for Yahweh had struck him. He lived isolated until his death. In the New Testament, James writes that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).

  1. What is the key in verse 5?

  2. What warning is hidden in verse 15?

  3. To whom did God give the task of burning incense?
