2 Chronicles 26 · Grade 5
Marvelously Helped
Read and Think
Uzziah's long reign was one of Judah's most successful. Chronicles gives the key in verse 5: as long as he sought Yahweh, God made him prosper. His victories, building projects, wells, farms, and army were all gifts. He was marvelously helped.
Verse 15 adds a warning hidden in praise: he was helped until he was strong. Verse 16 completes the turn. When he was strong, his heart was lifted up. He entered the temple to burn incense, a task God gave only to Aaron's sons. Pride made him think the king could take the priest's place.
Azariah and eighty priests confronted him, and the king raged. In that moment leprosy broke out on his forehead, and he hurried out, for Yahweh had struck him. He lived isolated until his death. In the New Testament, James writes that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).
