Yahweh Is Able

Name Date

Read the Story

Amaziah was twenty-five when he began to reign. He did right in Yahweh's eyes, but not with a perfect heart. He gathered Judah's army and hired soldiers from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.

A man of God came to him. He told the king not to let Israel's army go with him, for Yahweh was not with Israel. Amaziah asked about the hundred talents. The man of God answered, Yahweh is able to give you much more than this. So Amaziah sent the soldiers home.

Amaziah won against Edom. But he brought back the gods of Edom and bowed down to them. A prophet warned him, and he told the prophet to stop. He stopped listening to God.

Much More Than This

Name Date

Read and Think

Amaziah began well. He did right in Yahweh's eyes, though not with a perfect heart. He obeyed the law of Moses that children should not die for their fathers' sins. Then he prepared for war and hired a hundred thousand soldiers from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.

A man of God warned him that Yahweh was not with Israel. Amaziah's concern was the money. The prophet answered, Yahweh is able to give you much more than this. Amaziah obeyed, sent the soldiers home, and took courage. Judah won the battle against Edom.

Then came a strange turn. Amaziah brought home the gods of the very people he had defeated and worshiped them. God sent a prophet to ask why he would seek gods that could not save their own people. Amaziah silenced him. Proud of his win, he challenged Israel and was defeated. Jerusalem's wall was broken, and treasure was taken.

2 Chronicles 25 · Grade 5

A Divided Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Verse 2 summarizes Amaziah: he did right, but not with a perfect heart. His obedience was real but partial. He followed the law of Moses in punishing only the guilty, not their children. Yet his heart was never fully given to God, and the rest of his story reveals that.

The test came over money. He had paid a hundred talents for Israelite soldiers, and God's prophet told him to send them away. The prophet's answer still speaks: Yahweh is able to give much more than this. Amaziah obeyed, and Judah won. Trusting God sometimes means letting go of money already spent.

Victory exposed his divided heart. He worshiped Edom's defeated gods, refused the prophet, and was proud. He provoked Joash of Israel, who warned him with a parable about a thistle and a cedar. Amaziah would not listen, and Judah fell. In the New Testament, Paul writes that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).

  2. What was the test about?

  3. What does trusting God sometimes mean?
