2 Chronicles 25 · Grade 5
A Divided Heart
Read and Think
Verse 2 summarizes Amaziah: he did right, but not with a perfect heart. His obedience was real but partial. He followed the law of Moses in punishing only the guilty, not their children. Yet his heart was never fully given to God, and the rest of his story reveals that.
The test came over money. He had paid a hundred talents for Israelite soldiers, and God's prophet told him to send them away. The prophet's answer still speaks: Yahweh is able to give much more than this. Amaziah obeyed, and Judah won. Trusting God sometimes means letting go of money already spent.
Victory exposed his divided heart. He worshiped Edom's defeated gods, refused the prophet, and was proud. He provoked Joash of Israel, who warned him with a parable about a thistle and a cedar. Amaziah would not listen, and Judah fell. In the New Testament, Paul writes that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).
