The King's Son Must Reign

Name Date

Read and Think

In the seventh year, Jehoiada took courage. He made a covenant with five captains, who gathered the Levites and family heads from all Judah to Jerusalem. In God's house the whole assembly made a covenant with the young king. Jehoiada said, Behold, the king's son must reign, as Yahweh has spoken concerning the sons of David.

Jehoiada set the priests and Levites as guards around the temple, armed with David's spears and shields. Then they brought out Joash, put the crown on him, gave him the testimony, and anointed him. They shouted, Long live the king!

When Athaliah heard the noise and saw the king by his pillar, she tore her clothes and cried treason, but she was removed from God's house. Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, the people, and the king that they would be Yahweh's people. They tore down Baal's house, restored the offerings with rejoicing and singing, and set gatekeepers. The city was quiet.

A Lamp Relit

Name Date

Read and Think

For six years David's line survived only in a hidden child. In the seventh year, Jehoiada acted. He gathered captains, Levites, and family heads, and the assembly made a covenant with the king in God's house. His reason was God's word: the king's son must reign, as Yahweh has spoken concerning the sons of David.

The coronation followed the law carefully. Only priests and Levites entered the holy house. Guards with David's own spears surrounded the boy. They crowned Joash, gave him the testimony, which was God's law, and anointed him. Trumpets sounded and singers led praise.

Athaliah's reign ended, and Jehoiada made a covenant that the people would be Yahweh's people. Baal's temple was torn down. Worship was restored as David and Moses had ordered. The land rejoiced, and the city was quiet. In the New Testament, Peter tells believers, you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession (1 Peter 2:9).

  1. How did David's line survive for six years?

  2. What was Jehoiada's reason for acting?

  3. What was the testimony?
