This short chapter shows how close David's line came to ending. Ahaziah, grandson of Ahab through Athaliah, followed his mother's wicked counsel and the advice of Ahab's family. His alliance with Joram of Israel placed him in the path of Jehu, whom God had anointed to judge Ahab's house.

When Ahaziah died, Athaliah moved to destroy all the royal offspring of the house of Judah. If she had succeeded, God's promise of a lamp for David would seem to fail. The whole line of the Messiah hung on one baby.

God used a faithful woman. Jehoshabeath, a princess married to Jehoiada the priest, stole Joash away and hid him in God's house for six years. The promise survived in hiding. In the New Testament, another wicked ruler, Herod, tried to kill a royal child, but Joseph took Jesus and fled to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-14).
