A Lamp for David

Name Date

Read the Story

Jehoram was thirty-two when he became king. He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, as Ahab's house did. He did evil in Yahweh's sight.

However, Yahweh would not destroy David's house, because of his covenant with David. He promised David a lamp for him and his sons always. Later, Edom and Libnah broke away from Judah.

A letter came to Jehoram from Elijah the prophet. It said Jehoram did not follow the good ways of his father. Trouble would come. Jehoram did not obey God. But God still kept His promise to David.

A Covenant That Holds

Name Date

Read and Think

Jehoram became king after Jehoshaphat. He married Ahab's daughter and walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He made high places. He led Jerusalem away from God. He did evil in Yahweh's sight. He even put his brothers to death.

Yet Yahweh would not destroy David's house. He had made a covenant with David. He promised to give a lamp to him and his children always. Still, there were consequences. Edom and Libnah revolted, because Jehoram had forsaken Yahweh, the God of his fathers.

A writing came to Jehoram from Elijah. Because Jehoram had not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat or Asa, but in the ways of Ahab's house, great trouble would come. Philistines and Arabians raided the palace, and Jehoram suffered a painful disease. He reigned eight years and departed with no one's regret.

The Lamp Still Burns

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 21 is one of the darkest in Chronicles. Jehoram, son of the faithful Jehoshaphat, married Athaliah, Ahab's daughter, and followed Ahab's ways. He secured his throne by killing his brothers and led Judah to the high places. The alliance Jehoshaphat began in chapter 18 bore bitter fruit.

Yet verse 7 shines in the darkness. Yahweh would not destroy David's house because of his covenant, for he had promised to give a lamp to David and his children always. God's promise did not depend on Jehoram's goodness. The lamp of David's line would keep burning until the true King came.

Judgment still fell. Edom and Libnah revolted, Elijah's letter announced judgment, raiders carried off the king's household, and Jehoram died of a painful disease. The people made no burning for him, and he departed with no one's regret. In the New Testament, Zechariah praises God for raising up a horn of salvation in the house of his servant David (Luke 1:69).

Show What You Know

  1. Whom did Jehoram marry?

  2. What alliance bore bitter fruit?

  3. What did God's promise not depend on?

  4. How long would the lamp of David's line keep burning?

  5. What does Zechariah praise God for in Luke 1:69?
