2 Chronicles 21 · Grade 5
The Lamp Still Burns
Read and Think
Chapter 21 is one of the darkest in Chronicles. Jehoram, son of the faithful Jehoshaphat, married Athaliah, Ahab's daughter, and followed Ahab's ways. He secured his throne by killing his brothers and led Judah to the high places. The alliance Jehoshaphat began in chapter 18 bore bitter fruit.
Yet verse 7 shines in the darkness. Yahweh would not destroy David's house because of his covenant, for he had promised to give a lamp to David and his children always. God's promise did not depend on Jehoram's goodness. The lamp of David's line would keep burning until the true King came.
Judgment still fell. Edom and Libnah revolted, Elijah's letter announced judgment, raiders carried off the king's household, and Jehoram died of a painful disease. The people made no burning for him, and he departed with no one's regret. In the New Testament, Zechariah praises God for raising up a horn of salvation in the house of his servant David (Luke 1:69).
