A great army came against Jehoshaphat. He was afraid and set himself to seek Yahweh. He proclaimed a fast, and Judah gathered to seek help from Yahweh.

The Spirit came on Jahaziel. He told them not to be afraid, for the battle was not theirs, but God's. They should stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh. The next day the singers went first, praising Yahweh. God defeated the enemies, and Judah went home with joy.

Stand Still and See

Name Date

Read and Think

Messengers told Jehoshaphat a great multitude was coming from beyond the sea. He was afraid, but he set himself to seek Yahweh and proclaimed a fast. People came from every city of Judah to seek help from God.

In the new court of Yahweh's house, Jehoshaphat prayed. He said Yahweh is God in heaven, ruler over all the kingdoms. God gave this land to Abraham's descendants forever. He said they had no might against this great company. They did not know what to do, but their eyes were on God. All Judah stood with their wives and little ones.

The Spirit came on Jahaziel, a Levite. He told the people not to be afraid or dismayed, for the battle was not theirs, but God's. They would not need to fight. They should stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh. In the morning Jehoshaphat told them to believe in Yahweh their God. He set singers in front of the army to sing, Give thanks to Yahweh, for his loving kindness endures forever. When they began to praise, Yahweh defeated the enemy.

2 Chronicles 20 · Grade 5

Praise Before the Victory

Name Date

Read and Think

This chapter is a model of faith in a crisis. Jehoshaphat heard of a vast army and was afraid, which is honest. But his fear drove him to God. He set himself to seek Yahweh, proclaimed a fast, and gathered all Judah, even their little ones, to stand before God.

His prayer moved from God's greatness to God's promises to Judah's need. God rules over all kingdoms. God gave this land to the descendants of Abraham His friend. God promised to hear when His people cry to Him in this house. Then came the honest end: they had no might and did not know what to do, but their eyes were on God.

God answered through Jahaziel: the battle is not yours, but God's. Stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh. Judah worshiped before anything happened. Singers led the army, thanking God for his enduring loving kindness. The enemies turned on each other, and the valley was named Beracah, which means blessing. In the New Testament, Paul writes, thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Show What You Know

  1. What did Jehoshaphat's fear drive him to do?

  2. What three things did his prayer move through?

  3. What did Judah do before anything happened?

  4. What does Beracah mean?

  5. What does Paul write in 1 Corinthians 15:57?
