Solomon decided to build a house for Yahweh's name. He chose workers to carry loads and to cut stone in the mountains. He sent a message to Huram, king of Tyre.

Solomon asked for cedar, cypress, and algum trees from Lebanon. He said the house would be great, because God is greater than all gods. Heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain him.

Huram answered that Yahweh loves his people, so he made Solomon king. Huram blessed Yahweh, who made heaven and earth. He sent Huram-abi, a man skilled in gold, silver, bronze, wood, and cloth.

Who Can Build for God?

Name Date

Read and Think

Solomon set out to build a house for Yahweh's name and a palace for himself. He gathered workers to carry loads and to cut stone in the hill country, with overseers to lead them. Then he sent to Huram king of Tyre, who had helped David.

Solomon explained his purpose. The house was for burning incense, setting out the show bread, and offering sacrifices, as God ordained for Israel forever. But who is able to build God a house, since heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain him?

Huram blessed Yahweh, the God of Israel, who made heaven and earth and gave David a wise son. He sent Huram-abi, skilled in metal, stone, wood, and fine cloth. The logs would float by sea to Joppa, and Solomon would carry them up to Jerusalem.

  2. What was the house for?

A House for the Great God

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 2 shows Solomon gathering what he needs. He organized a huge work force with overseers and wrote to Huram of Tyre, David's old friend. He asked for a skilled craftsman and for cedar, cypress, and algum timber from Lebanon, promising wheat, barley, wine, and oil in return.

At the center of the letter is a confession of faith. The house would be great, because God is greater than all gods. Yet Solomon admitted that heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain God. He asked who he was to build God a house, except as a place to burn incense before Him.

Huram replied with praise to Yahweh, who made heaven and earth and gave David a wise son. He sent Huram-abi, whose mother was from Dan, skilled in every kind of work. In the New Testament, Paul says the God who made the world and all things in it doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands (Acts 17:24). Solomon knew the temple was a place to meet God, not a box to hold him.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Solomon promise Huram in return?

  2. What is at the center of the letter?

  3. Why was Solomon humble about building?

  4. Where was Huram-abi's mother from?

  5. What does Acts 17:24 say?
