You Judge for Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

Jehoshaphat returned to Jerusalem in peace. Jehu the seer asked if he should help the wicked and love those who hate Yahweh. Yet there were good things in him, for he had set his heart to seek God.

Jehoshaphat went out among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim. He brought them back to Yahweh, the God of their fathers.

He set judges in all the fortified cities. He told them to think about what they did, for they judged for Yahweh. He said the fear of Yahweh should be on them. With God there is no wrong, no favoritism, and no bribes. He told them to be brave, and Yahweh would be with the good.

Memory Verse

Now therefore let the fear of Yahweh be on you. Take heed and do it; for there is no iniquity with Yahweh our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.”

2 Chronicles 19 · Grade 4

Faithfully and with a Perfect Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

When Jehoshaphat came home safely from the battle, Jehu son of Hanani met him with a hard word. Should you help the wicked and love those who hate Yahweh? Yet Jehu also saw good in him, for he had removed the Asherah poles and set his heart to seek God.

Jehoshaphat responded by going out himself among the people, from Beersheba to Ephraim, to bring them back to Yahweh. Then he appointed judges in every fortified city of Judah. He told them to consider what they did, for they judged not for man but for Yahweh, who was with them in judgment.

In Jerusalem he set Levites, priests, and heads of families to decide hard cases. He charged them to act in the fear of Yahweh, faithfully, and with a perfect heart, and to warn the people not to sin. Amariah the chief priest led in God's matters, and Zebadiah in the king's matters. Deal courageously, he said.

2 Chronicles 19 · Grade 5

Justice Under God

Name Date

Read and Think

Jehoshaphat's alliance with Ahab nearly cost him his life. Jehu the seer named the problem plainly: helping the wicked and loving those who hate Yahweh brought wrath. But God also saw good in Jehoshaphat, for he had set his heart to seek God. Correction and grace came together.

Jehoshaphat did not sulk. He personally traveled through the land to turn people back to God. Then he reformed the courts. His name means Yahweh judges, and he reminded every judge that they judged on Yahweh's behalf. He told them to let the fear of Yahweh be on them, for with Him there is no iniquity, no favoritism, and no bribes.

In Jerusalem a high court of priests, Levites, and family heads handled hard cases. They were to serve faithfully and with a perfect heart and to warn people so that wrath would not come. The chapter shows that justice is part of worship. In the New Testament, James warns believers not to show favoritism (James 2:1).
