Truth Against the Crowd

Read and Think

Chapter 18 warns about bad alliances. Jehoshaphat, a good king, joined himself by marriage to wicked Ahab and agreed to go to war with him. He wisely asked to hear Yahweh's word first, but he did not act on what he heard.

Four hundred prophets told Ahab what he wanted to hear. Micaiah refused the pressure to agree with them. He promised to say only what his God says. His vision showed Israel scattered like sheep without a shepherd and a lying spirit in the mouths of Ahab's prophets. For this he was struck and imprisoned, yet he did not change his message.

Ahab tried to escape God's word with a disguise, but a man drew his bow at random and struck him between the joints of his armor. Nothing is random to God. Meanwhile Jehoshaphat was nearly killed in Ahab's royal robes, but he cried out, and God moved the enemy away. In the New Testament, Paul warns that a time will come when people will gather teachers to tell them what their ears want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3).
