The Book of the Law

Read the Story

Jehoshaphat reigned after Asa. Yahweh was with him, because he walked in the first ways of David. He sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments.

His heart was lifted up in the ways of Yahweh. He took away the high places and the Asherah poles. All Judah brought him gifts, and he had riches and honor.

In his third year he sent princes, Levites, and priests to teach in the cities. They had the book of Yahweh's law with them. They went through all the cities of Judah and taught the people. The fear of Yahweh fell on the kingdoms around, and they did not fight Judah.

A Heart Lifted Up

Name Date

Read and Think

Jehoshaphat strengthened Judah with soldiers and garrisons. Yahweh was with him, because he walked in the first ways of his father David and did not seek the Baals. He sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, not in the ways of Israel. So Yahweh established the kingdom in his hand.

His heart was lifted up in the ways of Yahweh. This was not pride, but courage and joy in following God. He removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.

In his third year he sent five princes, nine Levites, and two priests to teach. They carried the book of Yahweh's law through all the cities of Judah. The fear of Yahweh fell on the nations around. Even Philistines and Arabians brought gifts. Jehoshaphat grew great and built fortresses and store cities.

A Kingdom Taught by God's Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Jehoshaphat is one of the best kings in Chronicles. He began by strengthening Judah, but the Chronicler gives the real reason for his success: Yahweh was with him, because he sought God and walked in his commandments. His heart was lifted up in Yahweh's ways, a phrase that means bold, joyful devotion.

His most remarkable act was a teaching mission. In his third year, he sent princes, Levites, and priests throughout Judah with the book of Yahweh's law. Leaders and teachers worked together so that ordinary people in every town could hear God's word.

The result reached beyond Judah. The fear of Yahweh fell on the kingdoms around, so they made no war. Philistines brought gifts and silver, and Arabians brought flocks. A people shaped by God's word became strong and secure. In the New Testament, Paul writes that every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching (2 Timothy 3:16).

Show What You Know

  1. What is the real reason for Jehoshaphat's success?

  2. What does the phrase his heart was lifted up mean?

  3. What was his most remarkable act?

  4. Who worked together to teach?
