Relying on the Wrong King

Name Date

Read the Story

Baasha king of Israel built Ramah to keep people from going to Judah. Asa took silver and gold from Yahweh's house. He sent it to Ben Hadad king of Syria to help him against Baasha.

Hanani the seer came to Asa. He said that because Asa relied on the king of Syria and not on Yahweh, the Syrian army had escaped him. Yahweh's eyes run back and forth through the whole earth, to show himself strong for those whose heart is perfect toward him.

Asa was angry with the seer. In his thirty-ninth year, Asa became very sick in his feet. Yet in his sickness he did not seek Yahweh, but only the doctors. Asa died, and the people buried him with honor.

Memory Verse

For Yahweh’s eyes run back and forth throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. You have done foolishly in this; for from now on you will have wars.”

A Heart Perfect Toward Him

Name Date

Read and Think

In Asa's later years, Baasha of Israel fortified Ramah to cut off Judah. Asa did not cry to God as he had against Zerah. Instead he took silver and gold from the treasuries of Yahweh's house and the palace and sent them to Ben Hadad of Syria. Ben Hadad attacked Israel, and Baasha stopped building.

The plan worked, but Hanani the seer rebuked Asa. Asa had relied on the king of Syria and not on Yahweh his God. God had given him victory over the Ethiopians when he relied on Him. Yahweh's eyes run throughout the whole earth to show himself strong for those whose heart is perfect toward him. You have done foolishly.

Asa was angry and put the seer in prison, and he treated some of the people harshly. In his thirty-ninth year, his feet became badly diseased, yet he sought only the physicians, not Yahweh. He died in his forty-first year, and they made a great burning in his honor.

  2. Whom did Asa pay to attack Israel?

  3. What earlier victory did Hanani remind Asa of?

Finishing Well

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 16 is a sad ending for a good king. When Baasha threatened Judah, Asa took treasure from God's house to buy a foreign king's help. The plan worked outwardly. But the Chronicler measures success by trust, not results.

Hanani the seer reminded Asa of the vast Ethiopian army God had defeated when Asa relied on him. Then came one of the most famous verses in Chronicles: Yahweh's eyes run back and forth throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. God was looking for Asa's trust, and Asa had gone elsewhere.

Instead of repenting, Asa grew angry, imprisoned the prophet, and oppressed people. In his illness he sought only physicians, not Yahweh. Doctors are a gift, but Asa left God out entirely. His reign shows that past faith does not replace present trust. In the New Testament, Hebrews urges us to hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering (Hebrews 10:23).

Show What You Know

  1. How does the Chronicler measure success?

  2. What did Hanani remind Asa of?

  3. What is God looking for in 16:9?

  4. What was Asa's mistake in his illness?

  5. What does Hebrews 10:23 urge?
