2 Chronicles 14 · Grade 5
Strength in Weakness
Read and Think
Asa's reign began with reform. He tore down foreign altars, high places, pillars, and Asherah poles, and called Judah to seek Yahweh and obey his law. The Chronicler draws a clear link: because they sought Yahweh, he gave them rest. Asa used those quiet years to build and prepare.
Then came the test. Zerah the Ethiopian marched against Judah with a vast army and three hundred chariots. Asa did not trust his walls. He prayed one of the great prayers of Chronicles: no one but Yahweh can help, between the mighty and him who has no strength. He asked God to help them, because they relied on Him.
Asa ended with words of faith: Yahweh was their God, and he asked God not to let man prevail against Him. He saw the battle as God's honor at stake, not his own. God answered, and Judah returned with much spoil. In the New Testament, Paul hears the Lord say, my power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Think About It
Asa called himself one who has no strength. In the New Testament, God's power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). How can your weakness show God's strength?
Asa prayed for God's name, not his own. How can your prayers care about God's honor?
Memory Verse
“Asa cried to Yahweh his God, and said, “Yahweh, there is no one besides you to help, between the mighty and him who has no strength. Help us, Yahweh our God; for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. Yahweh, you are our God. Don’t let man prevail against you.””
