Strength Through Faithfulness

Name Date

Read and Think

Rehoboam's first impulse was war, but he obeyed the word of Yahweh through Shemaiah and turned back. The Chronicler praises this obedience. Rather than spending his strength on fighting his brothers, Rehoboam built and stocked fortress cities across Judah.

The real strength of Judah came from elsewhere. Jeroboam had made his own priests for the calf idols and cast out the Levites. Priests and Levites abandoned their pasture lands and property to come to Judah and Jerusalem. Then faithful people from every tribe followed them to worship Yahweh.

These worshipers strengthened the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam strong for three years, because they walked in the way of David and Solomon. The chapter also lists Rehoboam's large family. Faithfulness, not fortresses, was Judah's true defense. In the New Testament, Jesus says, seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33).
