Read the Story

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to make him king. Jeroboam and the people said Solomon had made their load heavy. They asked him to make it lighter, and they would serve him.

Rehoboam asked the old men who had served Solomon. They told him to be kind to the people and speak good words, and the people would serve him forever.

But Rehoboam left the old men's advice. He followed the young men and answered the people harshly. So the king did not listen, as God had said through Ahijah. The northern tribes turned away from David's house.

Read and Think

Rehoboam went to Shechem, where all Israel had gathered to make him king. Jeroboam had returned from Egypt. He and the people said that Solomon had made their yoke grievous. If Rehoboam would lighten it, they would serve him. He told them to come back in three days.

The old men who had stood before Solomon advised kindness: if he pleased the people and spoke good words, they would be his servants forever. But Rehoboam turned to the young men who had grown up with him. They told him to make the yoke heavier.

On the third day Rehoboam answered harshly, following the young men. He did not listen to the people, for it was brought about by God to fulfill the word spoken by Ahijah. When Israel saw that the king would not listen, they went to their tents, and Rehoboam reigned only over Judah.

A Kingdom Divided

Name Date

Read and Think

The Chronicler moves quickly from Solomon's glory to trouble. At Shechem, Rehoboam faced a simple request: if he lightened the heavy yoke, the people would serve him. He asked for three days to decide.

The elders had seen Solomon's reign and knew what a people needs. They advised that if he would be kind to the people and speak good words, they would serve him forever. The young men, his peers, urged a show of power: he should boast that his little finger was thicker than his father's waist.

Rehoboam chose pride and spoke roughly. The text says the turn of events was from God, to fulfill his word through Ahijah. God's plans stand even through human foolishness. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant (Mark 10:43). Rehoboam wanted servants; he would not be one.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the people ask Rehoboam to do?

  2. Why did the elders understand the people?

  3. What did the young men urge?

  4. What stands even through human foolishness?

  5. What did Jesus teach in Mark 10:43?
