2 Chronicles 1 · Grade 5
Wisdom from Above
Read and Think
The Chronicler opens Solomon's story with worship. Solomon took all Israel to Gibeon, where the tent of meeting and the bronze altar still stood. The ark was in Jerusalem, but the altar for burnt offerings was at Gibeon, and there Solomon sought Yahweh with a thousand offerings.
That night God offered Solomon anything he wanted. Solomon remembered God's great loving kindness to David. He asked for wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before the people, for he knew he could not lead God's great people alone.
God answered that because this was in Solomon's heart, he would receive wisdom and knowledge, and riches and honor besides. In the New Testament, James writes that if anyone lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all liberally (James 1:5). Solomon's request shows the kind of prayer God loves to answer.
