Strength in the Lord

Name Date

Read the Story

When David and his men came to Ziklag, the Amalekites had burned it. They had taken captive the women and everyone in it, but they killed no one. David and his men wept until they had no more power to weep. David's two wives were also taken.

The people spoke of stoning David. But David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God. He asked Abiathar to bring the ephod and inquired of the Lord. The Lord said, Pursue, for you will surely overtake them.

Two hundred men were too faint to cross the brook Besor, so four hundred went on. They found an Egyptian in a field and gave him bread, water, figs, and raisins. He led them to the raiders. David recovered all. Some wicked men did not want to share with the two hundred. David said, They shall share alike.

Memory Verse

“David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the souls of all the people were grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.”

From Ashes to Victory

Name Date

Read and Think

Returning to Ziklag, David found his town burned and every family taken. The Amalekites had killed no one but carried everyone away. David's men wept until they could weep no more. In their grief, they turned on David and spoke of stoning him. It was perhaps the lowest moment of David's life.

But David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God. Unlike in chapter 27, David now called for the ephod and inquired of the Lord. God's answer was clear: pursue, overtake, and recover all. David set out with six hundred men, but two hundred were too exhausted to go on.

An abandoned Egyptian servant, fed and revived, guided David to the Amalekite camp. David struck them from twilight to the next evening, and some fled on camels. David recovered all, and nothing was lacking. When some wanted to deny the two hundred a share, David said what Yahweh had given belonged to all. They shall share alike.

David Strengthened Himself

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 30 marks David's return to dependence on God. Coming back to Ziklag after being sent away by the Philistines, he found the town burned and the families taken captive. David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him. Then comes one of the most important sentences in his story: David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.

The contrast with chapter 27 is striking. There, David spoke in his heart and made plans alone. Here, he said to Abiathar, Please bring the ephod here to me, and he inquired of Yahweh. God answered, Pursue, for you will surely overtake them. The God who had been silent to Saul answered David.

God's provision came through an unexpected person: a sick Egyptian slave left behind by his Amalekite master. Shown kindness, he led David to the raiders. David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken. Then David showed the heart of a true king. When worthless men refused to share with those who stayed behind, he declared that the victory was Yahweh's gift: They shall share alike. He made it a statute for Israel and sent gifts to the elders of Judah, preparing the way for his reign.
