1 Samuel 30 · Grade 5
David Strengthened Himself
Read and Think
Chapter 30 marks David's return to dependence on God. Coming back to Ziklag after being sent away by the Philistines, he found the town burned and the families taken captive. David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him. Then comes one of the most important sentences in his story: David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.
The contrast with chapter 27 is striking. There, David spoke in his heart and made plans alone. Here, he said to Abiathar, Please bring the ephod here to me, and he inquired of Yahweh. God answered, Pursue, for you will surely overtake them. The God who had been silent to Saul answered David.
God's provision came through an unexpected person: a sick Egyptian slave left behind by his Amalekite master. Shown kindness, he led David to the raiders. David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken. Then David showed the heart of a true king. When worthless men refused to share with those who stayed behind, he declared that the victory was Yahweh's gift: They shall share alike. He made it a statute for Israel and sent gifts to the elders of Judah, preparing the way for his reign.
