A Voice in the Night

Name Date

Read the Story

In those days the Lord's word was rare. Eli was old, and his eyes were weak. One night the boy Samuel was lying down in the temple where the ark of God was. The lamp of God had not yet gone out.

The Lord called Samuel. Samuel ran to Eli and said, Here I am. Eli said he had not called. This happened three times. Then Eli understood that the Lord was calling the boy. He told Samuel to say, Speak; for your servant hears.

The Lord came and called, Samuel! Samuel! Samuel answered, Speak; for your servant hears. God said He would judge Eli's family, because Eli did not stop his sons. Samuel was afraid, but he told Eli everything. Samuel grew, and all Israel knew he was a prophet.

Your Servant Hears

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter opens with a dark note: the Lord's word was rare, and there were few visions. Eli's eyes had grown dim. Yet God's lamp had not yet gone out, and Samuel lay in the temple near the ark. Samuel did not yet know the Lord in this personal way, because God's word had not yet been revealed to him.

Three times the Lord called, and three times Samuel ran to Eli. Finally Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. He told him to answer, Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears. When God called, Samuel! Samuel! the boy listened.

God's first message to Samuel was hard. He would judge Eli's house because Eli knew his sons' sin and did not restrain them. In the morning Samuel was afraid to tell the vision, but when Eli pressed him, he hid nothing. Eli accepted it, saying, It is Yahweh. Let him do what seems good to him. The Lord was with Samuel and let none of his words fall to the ground.

When God Speaks Again

Name Date

Read and Think

Israel was in a spiritual night. The word of the Lord was rare, Eli's eyes were dim, and his sons were corrupt. Still, the lamp of God had not yet gone out, a quiet sign that God had not abandoned His people. Samuel ministered in the temple, though he did not yet know the Lord's word revealed to him.

God called Samuel by name three times. Each time Samuel ran to Eli, until Eli realized the Lord was calling and taught the boy to answer, Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears. When the Lord came and stood and called, Samuel listened. Listening is the first step in serving God.

The message was a sobering one. God would carry out the judgment already spoken against Eli's house, because Eli had not restrained his sons. Samuel feared telling it, but he told Eli every bit. Eli humbly accepted God's will. From then on, the Lord was with Samuel, let none of his words fall to the ground, and revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh. All Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, knew Samuel was a prophet of the Lord.

  1. What sign showed God had not abandoned His people?
