1 Samuel 3 · Grade 4

Your Servant Hears

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter opens with a dark note: the Lord's word was rare, and there were few visions. Eli's eyes had grown dim. Yet God's lamp had not yet gone out, and Samuel lay in the temple near the ark. Samuel did not yet know the Lord in this personal way, because God's word had not yet been revealed to him.

Three times the Lord called, and three times Samuel ran to Eli. Finally Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. He told him to answer, Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears. When God called, Samuel! Samuel! the boy listened.

God's first message to Samuel was hard. He would judge Eli's house because Eli knew his sons' sin and did not restrain them. In the morning Samuel was afraid to tell the vision, but when Eli pressed him, he hid nothing. Eli accepted it, saying, It is Yahweh. Let him do what seems good to him. The Lord was with Samuel and let none of his words fall to the ground.
