Sent Away in Peace

Name Date

Read the Story

The Philistines gathered all their armies to Aphek, and Israel camped by the spring in Jezreel. David and his men passed on in the rear with Achish. The princes of the Philistines asked, What about these Hebrews?

Achish said David had been with him for days and years, and he had found no fault in him. But the princes were angry. They feared David would turn against them in the battle. They remembered the song: Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

Achish called David and said he had been upright. Achish said David was good in his sight, as an angel of God. But the lords of the Philistines did not want him. David asked what he had done. Achish told him to rise up early and depart. So David and his men went back, and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

Memory Verse

But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; and the princes of the Philistines said to him, “Make the man return, that he may go back to his place where you have appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become an adversary to us. For with what should this fellow reconcile himself to his lord? Should it not be with the heads of these men?

Rescued From a Trap

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 27 left David in a dangerous position. Now the Philistines were marching against Israel, and David was in their army. If he fought, he would fight his own people. If he refused, his deception would be exposed. David seemed to have no good way out.

The way out came through the suspicion of the Philistine princes. They remembered the song about David's ten thousands. They feared he would win back Saul's favor by turning on them in battle. They demanded that Achish send him home.

Achish praised David, swearing that he had been upright. David protested, asking what he had done. Still, Achish sent him away. David rose early in the morning and left. Through the princes' distrust, God kept David from fighting against Israel, the people he was anointed to lead.

Providence Through Enemies

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 29 shows God working through unlikely means. David, living a double life, now marched in the rear of the Philistine army with Achish against Israel. His compromise in chapter 27 had led him into an impossible position. The narrator does not tell us what David intended to do.

The Philistine princes recognized the danger. Isn't this David, of whom people sang to one another in dances, saying, 'Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands'? They feared that David would reconcile with Saul by turning on them. Ironically, their distrust became the means of David's deliverance.

Achish, still deceived, praised David: I know that you are good in my sight, as an angel of God. David even protested that he wanted to fight the enemies of my lord the king, words that may hide his true meaning. But the decision stood. David departed early in the morning, and the Philistines went up to Jezreel. God, unseen in the chapter, kept His anointed from shedding Israelite blood.
