No Answer for Saul

Name Date

Read the Story

The Philistines gathered their armies to fight Israel. Achish told David he would go out with him in the army. Samuel was dead, and Saul had sent away those who had familiar spirits out of the land.

When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. He asked the Lord, but the Lord didn't answer him by dreams, by Urim, or by prophets. So Saul told his servants to find a woman who had a familiar spirit. This was something God had forbidden.

Saul disguised himself and went to the woman at Endor by night. He asked her to bring up Samuel. Samuel told Saul that the Lord had torn the kingdom out of his hand and given it to David. It was because he did not obey the Lord's voice. Saul fell on the earth, terrified. The woman made him eat before he left.

Memory Verse

“When Saul inquired of Yahweh, Yahweh didn’t answer him by dreams, by Urim, or by prophets.”

Turning From God in Fear

Name Date

Read and Think

Saul faced the Philistines without Samuel and without God's guidance. He had earlier obeyed God's law by sending away those who had familiar spirits. But now, when the Lord gave no answer, Saul turned to the very thing he had banned. He disobeyed God by seeking a medium.

Saul disguised himself and went by night to a woman at Endor who had a familiar spirit. He swore to her by Yahweh that she would not be punished. When she saw Samuel, she cried out and recognized that her visitor was Saul.

Samuel's message repeated what God had said before. Yahweh had departed from Saul and torn the kingdom from his hand, giving it to David, because Saul did not obey Yahweh's voice about Amalek. Israel would be delivered into the hand of the Philistines. Saul fell full length on the earth. He had no strength, for he had eaten nothing all day and night.

Show What You Know

  1. What had Saul earlier done that obeyed God's law?

  2. How did Saul disobey God?

  3. What did Saul swear to the woman?

  4. Why was the kingdom torn from Saul?

Think About It

  1. Why is it dangerous to look for answers anywhere other than God?

  2. Saul turned to God only when he was desperate. How can we seek God every day instead?

Memory Verse

Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since Yahweh has departed from you and has become your adversary?

The End of Saul's Road

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 28 shows how far Saul had fallen. Facing the Philistine army at Gilboa, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. When Saul inquired of Yahweh, Yahweh didn't answer him by dreams, by Urim, or by prophets. The silence was the result of years of disobedience. Saul had killed the priests at Nob, so even the priestly means of guidance had gone to David with Abiathar.

Desperate, Saul did what God's law forbade and what he himself had once banned. He disguised himself and sought a woman at Endor who had a familiar spirit. The text says the woman saw Samuel and cried out. It does not explain how this happened, and we should not go beyond what it says.

Samuel's words held no comfort. Why then do you ask me, since Yahweh has departed from you and has become your adversary? Yahweh had done just as He had spoken. Because you didn't obey Yahweh's voice, the kingdom was given to David, and Israel would be delivered to the Philistines. Saul fell to the ground, terrified. The woman and his servants urged him to eat, and that night they went away. The man who had once been chosen to save Israel was going into his final battle without God.

Show What You Know

  1. What was God's silence the result of?

  2. What had Saul once banned?

  3. What does the text not explain?

  4. What did Samuel say Yahweh had become to Saul?
