Kind Again

Name Date

Read the Story

Saul went to look for David again. He took three thousand men. One night David and a man named Abishai went into Saul's camp.

Everyone was asleep. Saul's spear was stuck in the ground by his head. Abishai wanted to hurt Saul. David said no. God had made Saul king.

David took Saul's spear and his jar of water. Then David went to a hill far away and called out. Saul knew David's voice. Saul said he had sinned. He blessed David.

Memory Verse

“Yahweh will give to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; because Yahweh delivered you into my hand today, and I wouldn’t stretch out my hand against Yahweh’s anointed.”

A Deep Sleep From God

Name Date

Read the Story

The Ziphites told Saul where David was hiding. Saul went to the wilderness of Ziph with three thousand chosen men. David sent out spies and found where Saul and Abner, the captain of his army, lay.

At night David and Abishai went into the camp. Saul lay sleeping with his spear stuck in the ground at his head. Abishai asked to strike him. David said, Don't destroy him. No one could harm the Lord's anointed and be guiltless. The Lord would deal with Saul in His own time.

David took the spear and the jar of water. No one woke, because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen on them. From the top of a hill, David called to Abner and asked why he had not kept watch over the king. Saul knew David's voice. He said he had sinned and blessed David.

Memory Verse

David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against Yahweh’s anointed, and be guiltless?”

Trusting God's Timing

Name Date

Read and Think

For the second time, Saul hunted David with three thousand chosen men, and for the second time David had Saul within reach. Saul lay asleep in the middle of his camp, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head. Abishai offered to pin him to the earth with one stroke.

David refused. He said that Yahweh would strike Saul, or his day would come to die, or he would perish in battle. David would not take matters into his own hands. Instead he took the spear and the water jar as proof. No one woke, because a deep sleep from Yahweh had fallen on them.

From a distant hilltop, David rebuked Abner for failing to guard the king. Then he asked Saul why he pursued his servant. Saul admitted, I have sinned, and promised to do David no more harm. David said that Yahweh will give to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness. Then David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.

Who Can Be Guiltless?

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 26 repeats the scene of chapter 24 with important differences. This time David chose to enter Saul's camp, rather than Saul stumbling into David's cave. The opportunity seemed even more clearly God-given: Yahweh had sent a deep sleep on the entire army. Abishai was sure: God has delivered up your enemy into your hand today.

Yet David's conviction had only grown stronger. Don't destroy him, he said, for who can stretch out his hand against Yahweh's anointed, and be guiltless? David entrusted Saul's end to God entirely, whether by Yahweh's hand, natural death, or battle. Taking the spear, the symbol of Saul's power, and the jar of water, the source of life in the wilderness, David showed he could have done anything but chose mercy.

David's appeal to Saul was both bold and humble. He asked what evil was in his hand and compared himself to a flea or a partridge hunted on the mountains. Saul again confessed, I have sinned, and even admitted he had played the fool. David answered, Yahweh will give to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness. This is the last meeting between Saul and David recorded in 1 Samuel.
