Mercy in the Cave

Name Date

Read the Story

Saul took three thousand chosen men to seek David on the rocks of the wild goats. Saul went into a cave by the sheep pens. David and his men were in the innermost parts of the cave.

David's men said this was the day the Lord had spoken of. David secretly cut off the skirt of Saul's robe. Afterward his heart struck him. He told his men the Lord forbid that he should do this to his lord, the Lord's anointed. He did not let them rise against Saul.

Outside, David bowed to the earth before Saul. He showed the skirt of the robe and said he had spared him. He asked the Lord to judge between them. Saul lifted up his voice and wept. He said David was more righteous than he, and that David would surely be king.

Memory Verse

“May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand will not be on you.”

Refusing Revenge

Name Date

Read and Think

David's men saw Saul alone in the cave as God's gift. They said the Lord had promised to deliver David's enemy into his hand. David crept up and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe. But even this small act troubled his conscience. He refused to harm the Lord's anointed and restrained his men.

When Saul left, David called out, My lord the king! He bowed with his face to the earth. He showed the piece of robe as proof that he meant no harm. He said, May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand will not be on you.

Saul was moved to tears. He admitted that David was more righteous, for David had done good to him while he had done evil. Saul recognized that David would surely be king. He asked David to swear not to cut off his family, and David swore it.

Leaving Vengeance to God

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 24 presents David with the perfect opportunity for revenge. Saul, hunting him with three thousand chosen men, entered alone into the very cave where David hid. David's men interpreted the moment as divine providence. Yet when David cut off the skirt of Saul's robe, his heart struck him, and he said, Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh's anointed.

David's restraint rests on reverence for God's appointment. Saul was still Yahweh's anointed, and David would not seize the throne by force. Calling Saul my father, he showed the piece of the robe as evidence and made his appeal: May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me of you; but my hand will not be on you. He called himself a dead dog, a flea, unworthy of the king's pursuit.

Saul's response was a rare moment of clarity. He wept and confessed, You are more righteous than I; for you have done good to me, whereas I have done evil to you. In the New Testament, Paul teaches believers not to take revenge but to give place to God's wrath (Romans 12:19). David's mercy in the cave reflects that same trust in God's justice.

  1. What did David's men think the moment was?

  2. On what did David's restraint rest?

  3. What did Saul confess?

  4. What does Paul teach believers in Romans 12:19?
