Saul Turns on the Priests

Name Date

Read the Story

David escaped to the cave of Adullam. His brothers and his father's house came to him. Everyone in distress, in debt, or discontented gathered to him, about four hundred men. David took his father and mother to the king of Moab until he knew what God would do for him.

Saul sat under a tamarisk tree with his spear and accused his servants of plotting with David. Doeg the Edomite said he saw David come to Ahimelech at Nob. Saul called Ahimelech, who said none of the servants was as faithful as David. Saul said Ahimelech would surely die.

Saul's guards would not lift a hand against the priests of the Lord. But Doeg obeyed Saul, and the priests were killed. Abiathar, a son of Ahimelech, escaped and fled to David. David said he had known Doeg would tell Saul. He told Abiathar, Stay with me. Don't be afraid.

Memory Verse

Stay with me. Don’t be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. You will be safe with me.”

A King Who Fights God

Name Date

Read and Think

David became the leader of a band of about four hundred men in distress, debt, or discontent. He protected his parents by taking them to Moab. The prophet Gad told him to go into the land of Judah. God was forming a new kind of community around His anointed.

Saul, sitting under a tamarisk tree with spear in hand, felt everyone had betrayed him, even his own son. Doeg the Edomite reported what he saw at Nob. Ahimelech defended himself honestly, praising David's faithfulness. But Saul's paranoia had no room for truth.

Saul ordered his guards to kill the priests of the Lord, but they refused. Doeg the Edomite, an outsider, carried out the order. Abiathar escaped to David. David took responsibility, admitting that his deception at Nob had led to this. He promised Abiathar safety, because they now faced the same enemy.

The Cost of a King's Fear

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 22 contrasts two leaders and two communities. David, hiding in the cave of Adullam, drew to himself everyone in distress, in debt, and discontented, about four hundred men. He cared for his aging parents and heeded the prophet Gad. Around God's anointed, a band of outcasts was being formed into a people.

Saul, by contrast, sat under the tamarisk tree in Gibeah with his spear, accusing his own servants of conspiracy and complaining that none was sorry for him. Doeg the Edomite exploited the moment. Ahimelech's honest defense, Who among all your servants is so faithful as David? only enraged Saul, who pronounced death on the priest and all his father's house.

When Saul commanded his guards to kill the priests of Yahweh, they would not put out their hand. Doeg did, and eighty-five priests died that day. In fighting David, Saul had become an enemy of the Lord's own servants, fulfilling the grim word spoken long ago against Eli's house. Abiathar escaped, and David took responsibility for the role his deception had played. His words to Abiathar, You will be safe with me, show the shelter God's anointed offers.
