Running Without Food or Sword

Name Date

Read the Story

David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest, who trembled to meet him alone. David said the king had sent him on business and asked for five loaves of bread. The priest had only holy bread, the show bread taken from before the Lord, and he gave it to David.

A man named Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief herdsman, was there that day. David asked for a spear or sword, saying he had left in a hurry. Ahimelech said the sword of Goliath, whom David killed in the valley of Elah, was wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. David said there was none like it.

David fled to Achish king of Gath. The servants said this was David, of whom the women sang. David laid these words in his heart and was very afraid. He changed his behavior and acted insane, scribbling on the gate doors. Achish asked why they had brought this madman to him.

Memory Verse

“So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the show bread that was taken from before Yahweh, to be replaced with hot bread in the day when it was taken away.”

A Fugitive's Fears

Name Date

Read and Think

Alone and on the run, David came to Ahimelech the priest at Nob. Ahimelech trembled, sensing something was wrong. David told him he was on the king's business, which was not true. He asked for bread, and the priest gave him the holy show bread, since no other bread was there.

Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief herdsman, was detained there before the Lord that day, and he watched. David also asked for a weapon and received the sword of Goliath, the very sword from his great victory. The giant-slayer now had to flee with a borrowed sword.

David fled to the Philistine city of Gath, Goliath's hometown. When the king's servants recognized him, David was very afraid. He pretended to be insane, scribbling on the doors and letting spit run down his beard. Achish sent him away. David, once so bold, was now frightened and alone.

From Champion to Fugitive

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 21 shows David at a low point. Arriving alone at Nob, he deceived Ahimelech, claiming to be on secret business for the king. The priest, after confirming the young men were ceremonially clean, gave him the holy bread, the show bread that had been taken from before Yahweh. In the New Testament, Jesus refers to this event to show that the Sabbath was made for man (Mark 2:25-27).

A detail sets up later tragedy: Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's herdsmen, was there that day. David also asked for a weapon and received the sword of Goliath, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. The symbol of his triumph had become the tool of a fugitive.

Fleeing to Achish king of Gath, David was recognized as the one of whom they sang, David his ten thousands. David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath. He feigned madness, scribbling on the gate doors and letting saliva run down his beard. Achish dismissed him. The man after God's own heart was learning, through fear and humiliation, to depend on God alone.

Show What You Know

  1. What did David claim at Nob?

  2. What does Jesus show by referring to this event?

  3. What detail sets up later tragedy?

  4. What was David learning through fear and humiliation?
