No One Holy Like God

Name Date

Read the Story

Hannah prayed with a song of joy. She said there is no one as holy as the Lord, and no rock like our God. The Lord brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor out of the dust and seats them with princes.

Samuel served the Lord before Eli, wearing a linen ephod. Each year Hannah brought him a little robe. Eli blessed Hannah, and God gave her three sons and two daughters. The boy Samuel grew in favor with the Lord and with people.

Eli's sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were wicked. They took the best of the offerings for themselves and did not respect the Lord. Eli scolded them, but they did not listen. A man of God told Eli that the Lord honors those who honor Him.

“There is no one as holy as Yahweh, for there is no one besides you, nor is there any rock like our God.”

Honor Those Who Honor Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Hannah's prayer is a song of praise. She rejoices in God's salvation and declares that there is no rock like our God. The Lord weighs every action. He turns things upside down: the hungry are satisfied, the barren woman has children, and the poor are lifted to sit with princes. She ends by saying God will give strength to His king, His anointed.

In contrast, Eli's sons were wicked men who did not know the Lord. They took meat from the offerings before the fat was burned, and threatened to take it by force. Their sin was very great, because they despised the Lord's offering. Meanwhile young Samuel ministered before the Lord and grew in favor with God and people.

A man of God warned Eli that he had honored his sons above the Lord. The Lord said, Those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be cursed. God promised to raise up a faithful priest who would do what was in His heart.

Show What You Know

  1. What does Hannah say about how God treats the poor?

  2. Why was the sin of Eli's sons so great?

  3. How did Samuel grow?

  4. Whom did God promise to raise up?

Think About It

  1. Hannah's song says God lifts up the lowly. When have you seen God care for someone who felt small?

  2. Eli honored his sons above God. What are ways people today can put something above God?

Memory Verse

“Therefore Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father should walk before me forever.’ But now Yahweh says, ‘Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be cursed.

1 Samuel 2 · Grade 5

Two Kinds of Servants

Name Date

Read and Think

Hannah's song celebrates the God who reverses human fortunes. The proud are warned not to boast, because the Lord is a God of knowledge who weighs actions. He makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and also lifts up. Her song closes with the first mention in this book of the Lord's king and His anointed, looking ahead to the kings God would raise up.

The chapter then sets two kinds of servants side by side. Hophni and Phinehas were priests, but they did not know the Lord. They grabbed the best meat before it was offered and treated the offering with contempt, and Eli's warning came too late to change them. Between these scenes, the boy Samuel ministered before the Lord in a linen ephod and grew in favor with both the Lord and people.

A man of God announced judgment on Eli's house. Eli had honored his sons above God. The key principle is stated plainly: those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be cursed. God would raise up a faithful priest who would act according to what was in His heart and mind. In the New Testament, Luke uses similar words of the boy Jesus, who grew in favor with God and men (Luke 2:52).

Show What You Know

  1. What does Hannah's song say God does with the proud and the lowly?

  2. How did Hophni and Phinehas treat the offering?

  3. What principle did the man of God state?

  4. What New Testament verse uses words like 2:26?
