1 Samuel 2 · Grade 4
Honor Those Who Honor Me
Read and Think
Hannah's prayer is a song of praise. She rejoices in God's salvation and declares that there is no rock like our God. The Lord weighs every action. He turns things upside down: the hungry are satisfied, the barren woman has children, and the poor are lifted to sit with princes. She ends by saying God will give strength to His king, His anointed.
In contrast, Eli's sons were wicked men who did not know the Lord. They took meat from the offerings before the fat was burned, and threatened to take it by force. Their sin was very great, because they despised the Lord's offering. Meanwhile young Samuel ministered before the Lord and grew in favor with God and people.
A man of God warned Eli that he had honored his sons above the Lord. The Lord said, Those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be cursed. God promised to raise up a faithful priest who would do what was in His heart.
