1 Samuel 19 · Grade 5
Is Saul Also Among the Prophets?
Read and Think
Saul's hostility, once hidden, now became open. He commanded Jonathan and his servants to kill David. Jonathan, who greatly delighted in David, spoke good of him and reasoned with Saul: David had put his life in his hand to strike the Philistine, and Yahweh had worked a great victory for all Israel. Why sin against innocent blood? Saul swore, As Yahweh lives, he shall not be put to death.
The oath was soon broken. When David again defeated the Philistines, an evil spirit from Yahweh came on Saul, and he tried to pin David to the wall with his spear. David fled. Saul's own children now protected David from their father. Michal let David down through the window, placed the teraphim in his bed, and told the messengers he was sick, buying him time.
David found refuge with Samuel at Naioth in Ramah. Three times Saul sent messengers, and three times God's Spirit overcame them so that they prophesied. Finally Saul came himself, and the Spirit came on him; he stripped off his clothes and lay down all that day and night before Samuel. The proverb was repeated, Is Saul also among the prophets? The scene shows God overruling a king's will to protect His chosen one.
