1 Samuel 19 · Grade 4

God Guards His Anointed

Name Date

Read and Think

Saul now openly ordered his son and servants to kill David. Jonathan bravely stood up for his friend. He reminded his father that David had risked his life to strike Goliath and that the Lord had worked a great victory. Saul listened and swore by the Lord that David would not die.

But Saul's promise did not last. After another victory by David, Saul tried again to pin him to the wall with his spear. David escaped, and Saul sent men to his house. Michal, Saul's own daughter, helped David flee through a window and fooled the messengers with an image in the bed.

David fled to Samuel. Saul sent three groups of messengers to capture him, but each time the Spirit of God came on them, and they prophesied. When Saul went himself, the Spirit came on him as well, and he lay down all day and night. God protected David in surprising ways.
